Chesapeake Employers has dedicated a claim staff of 26 individuals to administer all State of Maryland claims. There are three units consisting of 19 adjusters and three nurse case managers. A supervisor manages each unit. The entire dedicated State claims staff reports to a Director. Further, Chesapeake Employers legal liaisons are assigned to each team to provide legal advice and input.
The dedicated claims staff is engaged in continuous education. The adjusters receive ongoing education from the Chesapeake Employers legal staff as well as from external attorneys. This education keeps the claims staff abreast of current and new case law that may impact claims handling. The staff also receives ongoing training from members of the medical community to ensure they are informed of the newest treatment options for workers' compensation injuries. When appropriate, the staff also receives training from the Workers' Compensation Commissioners.
Claims staff is also encouraged to take advantage of professional education opportunities such as CPCU (Certified Property Casualty Underwriter) or AIC (Associate in Claims) courses. Both are nationally recognized professional insurance designations.
Recognizing that the needs of different state agencies may vary, Chesapeake Employers offers claims training programs for our clients and their employees. Our team members develop special relationships with their agency contacts and act as liaisons to help with issues or concerns on the agency's behalf.
Team members are required to visit or consult with four agencies per year to discuss claims and/or any other pertinent issues specific to the agency. Communication is encouraged between the Chesapeake Employers adjuster and his or her assigned agencies to keep the agency informed of claim status. Agencies are consulted on all proposed settlements in excess of $25,000 to discuss benefits and cost savings of the settlement. Claims can also discuss the need for special reports with agencies, and work with our IS (Information Systems) department to determine feasibility and deliverability.
Our Legal Department consists of experienced attorneys, paralegals, and assistants. Their primary functions are advising the Claims Department on legal issues affecting particular claims and advocating the position of employers and the Claims Department on respective cases before the Maryland Workers' Compensation Commission, Maryland District Courts, and Maryland's Courts of Appeal. In addition, the Legal Department advises other Chesapeake Employers departments on coverage issues.
